Cabin crew, also known as Flight Attendants provide in-flight services to ensure that airline passengers have a comfortable and smooth flying experience. Their duties include answering passengers’ questions, enforcing safety measures before, during and after takeoff and serving food and beverages during flights.

Cabin Crew duties and responsibilities


The Cabin Crew of a commercial airline ensures that passengers on short and long-haul flights are comfortable and safe. Their typical duties and responsibilities include:

  • Attending pre-flight meetings to understand each Flight Attendant’s duty and position during the flight.
  • Greeting passengers as they board and exit the plane and helping them settle into their seats.
  • Checking the cabin and cargo section before taking-off, enforcing safety and security regulations.
  • Demonstrating the safety procedures professionally.
  • Monitoring the cabin frequently throughout the flight.
  • Providing personalised assistance to passengers with special needs, such as people with disabilities, children and the elderly.
  • Maintaining composure and assisting passengers during emergencies.
  • Supplying in-flight entertainment to passengers.

What does Cabin Crew do?

Cabin Crew are responsible for the safety, welfare and comfort of air travel passengers. They possess the training to handle emergency and security situations, including administering first aid to injured or ill passengers. Cabin Crew also help passengers board the plane. They demonstrate safety procedures to passengers and check that all emergency equipment work properly.

Cabin Crews work shifts, which can be irregular at times. They are often required to work during weekends, public holidays, nights and early mornings, depending on the flight duration. Cabin Crew usually work 30 to 40 hours per week.

A successful Cabin Crew candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications needed to perform duties and responsibilities effectively. Include:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good communication skills, including fluency in English and knowledge of other major languages
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while maintaining a cheerful appearance
  • Ability to remain calm during emergencies
  • Assertiveness and the ability to remain courteous while dealing with difficult passengers
  • Tactful behaviour and diplomacy
  • Excellent fitness and general health, including the ability to swim in water with a minimum depth of 25 metres
  • Excellent vision and hearing

Cabin Crew experience requirements

A strong foundation in customer service, sales, travel and tourism are essential requirements for Cabin Crews. Experience in the hotel industry, catering and nursing is also beneficial for this role. Employers also prefer candidates with experience in a position that requires excellent communication and teamwork.

Cabin Crew education and training requirements

Cabin Crew members require only a certificate or vocational training to qualify for employment. Employers accept candidates with qualifications in travel and tourism, such as the Level 2 Certificate in Air Cabin Crew. Some employers recruit Flight Attendants through a Cabin Crew advanced apprenticeship which requires 12 months of on-the-job training. Airlines can also employ candidates with good customer service skills if they have relevant GCSEs, including English and maths. Some airlines prefer candidates with training or interests in hospitality management, travel, leisure and tourism management and languages.
